Isotropic as well as anisotropic ferrite‐martensite microstructures in a Fe‐8 wt.% Ni‐0.37 wt.% C alloy are produced by various thermo‐mechanical treatments. They are characterized by means of microscopy and quantitative stereology and exposed to abrasive wear in a pin‐test apparatus. The observed directionality of the wear rates is explained considering the differences of the respective wear mechanisms. The optimum wear resistance results from an anisotropic microstructure with elongated martensitic regions arranged perpendicularly to the sliding direction.
