Quantitative methods have been used to determine the hardenability in high purity 2% Si and 4% Si steels of eutectoid compositions as compared to a plain high purity eutectoid steel. Silicon additions widen the temperature range over which pearlite forms by raising the Ae 1 and increases the overall reaction rate. Jominy end‐quench tests show that silicon has no significant effect on hardenability, at least for eutectoid alloys containing silicon as the only alloying addition.
