Teleonics or the Biomatrix Approach is a systemic approach, the basic units of which are considered to be goal‐oriented process systems called teleons. It has been developed during the last 20 odd years as a descriptive approach that can be utilized to analyse and design problems in different areas, including physiology, healthcare, development, psychology, education, organizational development and software development. The present paper aims at summarizing the most important formalized principles of teleonics in a mathematico‐symbolic way. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
