Many recent signicant advances in software engi-neering are related to measurements. Examplesinclude the creation of new repositories such as theISBSG (International Software Benchmarking Stan-dards Group), new functional size measurementstandards such as COSMIC Full Function Points, new metrics for the new development paradigmsin aspect-oriented programming or Web services, etc. Furthermore, the importance of measurementis now reected in the new guide to the SoftwareEngineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) andthe increase in organizational use of measurementsin the last few years (Kasunic, 2006). The aim of thisspecial issue is to present some of the importantrecent advances in the area of measurement relatedto the assessment and improvement of softwareprocesses and products from both theoretical andpractical perspectives. The selected articles presented in this specialissue include depth and breadth examples of apply-ing different kinds of measurements to softwareengineering issues for process improvement andproduct assessment:• ‘ASpiralProcessModelforCaseStudiesonSoft-wareQualityMonitoring – MethodandMetrics’by Carina Andersson and Per Runeson, LundUniversity, Sweden.
