A description of an interactive geometric editor for the layout of very large scale NMOS integrated circuits is presented. The implementation of the VLSI Interactive Layout Editor (VILE) using an HP2648A Graphics Terminal connected to a mainframe computer is described. The command language for the user‐computer interface is described, and to demonstrate the use of the editor an example of an integrated circuit layout is documented.
