This paper describes the problems encountered during the standardization of RTL/2. It is presented as an object lesson to illustrate the care needed when first defining a programming language to ensure that the loopholes are few. As well as describing the minor alterations made to the definition of RTL/2, this paper serves as a historical record of some of the other possible changes which were considered and rejected.
