This paper describes the implementation of a disk filing facility, providing on‐line access to graphics and text output produced by jobs run in a batch environment. The introductory sections establish the general context in which the system is used and give some indication of the main facilities. The structure and properties of the files and the various implementation problems, such as multi‐access control and file security, are then outlined. The last section deals with the techniques used for diverting line printer output from batch jobs into the filing system. Finally, an attempt is made to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the principal methods.
