This paper discusses the development of software to enable the PDP‐8 to handle Datel telephone calls automatically. The software treats the automatic dataphone equipment as a finite state machine. This treatment is compared to the more ad hoc approach which deals with each function of the equipment in an individual way. It is shown that the more formal approach has considerable advantages in shortening development time by reducing debugging and produces a system which is easy to extend.
