The circadian temporal organization of cellular functions segregates chemically incompatible processes into different times of the day. It is emerging that the molecular temporal organization of lipid metabolism throughout the day is crucial for physiological fitness, the dysfunction of which contributes to current epidemic metabolic diseases related to lipids. Here, current conceptual frameworks of the circadian clock system and knowledge of the circadian rhythm of lipid metabolism in different metabolic tissues and organs in health and disease are summarized. Recent advances in dietary and chemical approaches to modulate the circadian rhythm of lipids and the implications to treating human diseases are also reviewed.
