A colorimetric detection system for Hg 2+ in aqueous media is developed with high selectivity and sensitivity based on the mixing of gold nanoparticles and oligopeptides. Oligopeptides with cysteine (Cys) at both ends normally aggregate gold nanoparticles, which can be disturbed by Hg 2+ through formation of an oligopeptide–Hg 2+ complex.
