Ru(bpy) 3 2+ ‐doped silica nanoparticles surface‐functionalized with a phosphatidylserine‐selective synthetic ligand are designed for the purpose of detecting and imaging apoptotic cells (see image). The preferential binding of this ligand to phosphatidylserine in preference to other phospholipids is confirmed and the ligands are conjugated onto the highly fluorescent and biocompatible Ru(bpy) 3 2+ ‐doped silica nanoparticles in a multivalent fashion.
