With or without? The nucleation and growth of InAs nanowires (NWs) from In droplets on an InAs(111)B substrate with (see image, above) and without (below) Au nanoparticles is investigated. Au nanoparticles were found to facilitate the decomposition of the InAs (111)B substrate. This catalytic effect is further confirmed by NW growth in a closed chemical vapor deposition tube mediated by Au nanoparticles without the use of external sources other than the growth substrate itself.
