Thiol‐stabilized FePt nanoparticles can be encapsulated in a thin silica overlayer through the application of (3‐mercaptopropyl)‐trimethoxysilane as the silica precursor (see diagram). The particles exhibit the combined features of surface passivation, enhanced storage capacity, and anchored sites for magnetic separation. Such particles offer great promise in (bio)catalysis and other fields.
