The reaction of activated alcohols with the O ‐( tert ‐butyl) Se ‐phenyl selenocarbonate/hydroiodic acid system to give the corresponding alkyl phenyl selenides is described. The direct conversion of the hydroxyl group into a phenylselenenyl group is also extended to allyl‐ and tertiary alkyl alcohols. This work provides a safe, metal‐free, and operationally simple process for the preparation of alkyl phenyl selenides from benzylic alcohols.
