Novel high energy material 1,2,4,4‐tetranitropyrazolidine‐3,5‐dione has been synthesized from inexpensive and readily available starting material Diethyl malonate. The attractive features of the synthesis involve short synthetic route, use of inexpensive reagents. Furthermore, 1,2,4,4‐tetranitropyrazolidine‐3,5‐dione named as ACRAJONE shows excellent physical properties such as density >2.0 g cm −3 , detonation velocity >9 km/s and useful for high energy materials application.
