Two metal borates, namely, Pb 6 O(B 6 O 14 ) ( 1 ) and β ‐BaAl[B 4 O 8 (OH)](H 2 O) ( 2 ) have been obtained and characterized. Compound 1 crystallizes into triclinic crystal system with a centrosymmetric space group of P ‐1 and its structure features [Pb 6 O 13 ] 14− layers which are further connected by [B 6 O 14 ] 10− chains into a 3D framework. Compound 2 is isostructural with β ‐BaGa[B 4 O 8 (OH)](H 2 O) and adopts a centrosymmetric space group P ‐1. Its structure consists of a AlB 4 O 10 (OH) bilayers with intersecting channel systems comprised of two interconnected porous sheets. Each compound was also characterized by optical and thermogravimetric analysis and band structure calculations have been carried out based on density functional theory methods.
