KOH was used as the catalyst for an efficient synthesis of tribromoethyl carbinols from aldehydes and bromoform. The new synthesis method has many advantages, such as the low price of the raw materials and catalyst, the wide range of substrates such as, aromatic, aliphatic and heterocyclic aldehydes. It's worth mentioning that the reaction could be scaled up to grams in excellent yield (99%), in the presence of 10 mol% KOH.
