Antioxidants have attracted interest for a very long time. Because of their unique ability to quench other toxic free radicals in the body, these molecules have been the focus of many chemists. Herein, we have undertaken a quantum chemical study on some carbohydrates and their heavier Se and Te derivatives to evaluate the essential parameters responsible for showing antioxidant abilities through different mechanistic pathways. The effect of different solvent media on their antioxidant ability has also been explored. Our study reveals that heavier Se and Te containing carbohydrates show higher antioxidant abilities and in addition, the aromatic derivatives of these molecules show even superior ability.
