We demonstrate here that under a mild condition (aqueous solution, pH 7, 50 °C, 6 MPa O 2 ) gold nanocrystals (AuNCs) can catalyze the oxidation of 1‐phenylethane‐1,2‐diol to 2‐hydroxy‐1‐phenylethan‐1‐one selectively. And the yield can reach 87% when 94% the reactant is converted. Through comparing with different substrates, we show that the high selectivity of the AuNCs for 2‐hydroxy‐1‐phenylethan‐1‐one is due to the activity difference between the two hydroxy groups in the diol. AuNCs tend to catalyze the oxidation of the hydroxy group that locates in α‐C position of benzyl diol.
