The preparation of CH 3 F via vapor phase catalytic fluorination of CH 3 OCH 3 promoted by AlF 3 (H‐AlF 3 , M‐AlF 3 , L‐AlF 3 ) with different surface areas was investigated, with the reaction occurring as follows: CH 3 OCH 3 +2 HF → 2CH 3 F + H 2 O. It was found that H‐AlF 3 exhibited the highest catalytic activity with high stability among the three types of AlF 3 tested in the 100‐h life‐span test, which can be attributed to the massive amount of amorphous AlF 3 in H‐AlF 3 . H‐AlF 3 contains the highest amount of acid and largest surface area among the AlF 3 species. The synthetic route of CH 3 F showed higher conversion of raw material and better selectivity for CH 3 F than traditional routes.
