Examples of triglyceride transesterification reactions by small alcohols such as ethanol, butanol and glycerol are used to illustrate the significance of cavitation in ultrasound assisted reactions. It was shown that minor addition of a compound with low vapor tension in the reaction conditions results in significant enhancements in reaction rate by promoting cavitation.
