Trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) in the presence of PhI(OAc) 2 and BF 3 . OEt 2 in dichloromethane is shown to be effective for direct conversion of phthalaldehydic acids into 3‐cyanophthalides at rt in good–excellent yields. A number of substituents in the substrates tolerate the reaction conditions. This method works well also with 2‐formylbenzamides.
