Theoretical calculations have been made for different single and duplex systems (Cr 2 O 3 /Fe, MnCr 2 O 4 /Fe, MnCr 2 O 4 /Cr 2 O 3 /Fe and Cr 2 O 3 /MnCr 2 O 4 /Fe) in order to study the initial stages of high temperature oxidation of AISI 304 and 316 stainless steels by FTIR specular reflectance spectroscopy at variable incidence. Used in conjunction with physical methods like SIMS or AES, the vibrational spectroscopy gives access to structural and compositional information in the analysis of multilayer systems with a high level of complication.
