The surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) treated by a cold remote nitrogen plasma (CRNP) has been examined by x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The untreated PET surface exhibited a C 1s complex peak which corresponds to the chemical formula of this compound. The treatment induced incorporation of nitrogen as amine and nitrile groups, but no new oxygen species have been detected. The nitrogen incorporation rate on the PET surface was not modified after ageing in ambient air for at least 84 days. The nitrogen fixation rate was dependent upon the energy involved by microwave discharge. This feature is quite interesting for a possible industrial use of the process.
