XPS has been used to examine the surface of the fluoride ion‐selective electrode membrane. It has been found that water chemisorbs onto the surface of the LaF 3 crystal. Surface degradation products were found on the LaF 3 membrane after prolonged exposure to water. It is proposed that these products influence the time taken to obtain stable electrode potentials. The effect of solutions of low pH on the response of the fluoride electrode has been studied, and a mechanism for their action is proposed. As is the case for glass‐electrode membranes, a gel layer has also been observed on the surface of LaF 3 .
