The use of surface analysis in adhesion studies is reviewed and the various levels of information attainable is illustrated with a series of examples taken from studies of organic coatings on steel substrates. It is concluded that for a complete understanding of environmental degradation processes the intact interfacial bond must first be will understood, and failure in an inert atmosphere carefully documented.
