XPS has been used to monitor the uptake of Na + ions by p(acrylic acid/methyl methacrylate) and of Cl − ions by p(dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate/methyl methacrylate) from NaCl solution as a function of time and electrolyte concentration. The resulting changes in both the polymer and the solid/liquid interface are discussed in terms of the performance of these materials in the biological environment.
