The origin of inelastic scattering in ISS spectra at low energy ratios ( E / E 0 ≤ 0.3) is discussed, and a description of results from ISS and XPS experiments on well‐characterized Co/ZSM‐5 catalysts after calcination in air and reduction in H 2 , H 2 + CO, or CO is given. These treatments show that the chemisorption of hydrogen on highly dispersed metallic Co and Fe causes shielding of the metal from ISS detection. Additionally, the presence of hydrogen, whether in a chemisorbed form or in other forms such as hydrocarbons or H 2 O, affects significantly the intensity of the inelastic scattering.
