ESCA studies have been performed to investigate the exchange equilibria which occur between a lead ion selective electrode membrane containing multiple fixed sites due to surface degradation and various bivalent cations. The membranes have been exposed to solutions containing a single bivalent cation and to solutions containing Pb 2+ and an equal amount of a second bivalent cation. The changes in surface speciation have been inferred from spectral intensity data. The possibility of obtaining exchange equilibrium constants from ESCA intensity data has been investigated.
