The compounds formed on the surface of minerals under the action of flotation reagents have been studied by ESCA. On a ZnS surface treated with CuSO 4 solution, Cu 2 S and SO   4 2−were identified. The quantity of Cu 2 S increased and that of SO   4 2−decreased with increased Fe content in ZnS. After treatment of PbS with K 2 Cr 2 O 7 solution, a combination of Cr 2 O 3 and Pb(OH) 2 , or PbCr 2 O 4 was formed on the surface. The action of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 solution on Sb 2 S 3 led to the formation of PbSb 2 S 4 type compounds. HgO or HgS were formed on an Sb 2 S 3 surface after treatment with (C 2 H 5 ) 2 NC 6 H 4 HGOCOCH 3 solution. In all cases excluding the PbS and K 2 Cr 2 O 7 system the quantity of products formed on the surface increased with reagent concentration.
