The momentum‐dependent dispersion of ion trajectories in a homogeneous magnetic sector field is derived by a trigonometric method. Contrary to the often used transfer matrix technique, the results are not restricted to small momentum differences. Based on the results of the trigonometric evaluation, an expression for the mass resolution of a magnetic sector for an entering ion beam is derived and extensively discussed. An example for high‐resolution magnetic mass spectrometry is presented.
