Herein, we report the characterisation of pine wood strands ( Pinus sylvestris ) by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In this work, solvent extracted and non‐extracted wood strands from heartwood and sapwood pine were analysed to examine if notable differences can be observed. Reference samples of lignin and cellulose were analysed to enable the identification of the different spectral components of wood. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
