The F Kα x‐ray fluorescence spectrum of LuF 3 is excited by monochromated synchrotron radiation and a satellite peak is observed at the higher energy side of the F Kα 1, 2 lines. The intensity of this peak depends on the incident x‐ray energy; the presence of the threshold energy to excite the satellite proves that the satellite is assigned to Kα 3, 4 due to the transition 1s −1 2p −1 → 2p −2 . The K α3, 4 /K α1, 2 intensity ratio for LuF 3 is 0.20, which is significantly weaker than that for NaF (0.46). It is observed that the Kα 1, 2 line width of LuF 3 is significantly broader than that for NaF. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
