We have investigated a method for finding the dependency of the apparent local barrier height (LBH) on measurement parameters (tunnelling current, bias voltage and tip–sample separation). The validity of the method is demonstrated by measuring the LBH on an Au(111) surface. This method enables comparison of LBH values on various surfaces. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
