An optical fingerprinting solution with a switchable backlight is demonstrated for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In fingerprinting mode, the collimated infrared light is applied to improve the signal‐noise ratio (SNR) between the valley and ridge of the fingerprint. Compare with the conventional backlight, the SNR of the proposed structure can be improved by 84%. Furthermore, the fingerprinting mode and the display mode may work at the same time without interference because of the different wavelength and light path. It shows the great potential application of LCD based optical fingerprint.
