The authors propose a method to increase the contrast of image by suppressing black luminance (Min Lum) in a 3D head up display based on an active parallax barrier. In the conventional active barrier, the electronic barrier is controlled to follow the motion of the observer and to increase the resolution by time‐division multiplexing. In the proposed method, the barrier is closed in the black area of the image, which suppresses black luminance and increases the contrast of 3D image.
