A phase‐only modulation mode based on the pre‐transitional effect of antiferroelectric liquid crystal(AFLC) is demonstrated. This field‐induced biaxiality enables 2π phase modulation of 632.8nm light and keeps the polarization state invariant for TE or TM light. Based on this, a switchable phase grating is constructed and the maximum diffraction efficiency of 37.0% is achieved at 1.8V/µm for the ±1st order.
