The effects of inserted retardation films and color filters were investigated for improving contrast ratio of in‐plane‐switchingmode TFT‐LCDs. Contrast ratios with horizontally wide viewing angles corresponding to automotive applications were increased by optimizing optical characteristics of the retardation films. The effects of color filters on the contrast ratio were also investigated by comparing optical characteristics of fabricated samples.
