We propose a new Japanese text layout for increasing the reading rate. The proposed layout aligns characters in a stepwise manner using the smallest Japanese linguistic unit (bunsetsu) with an incremental indentation. The reading rate obtained using the proposed layout is approximately 1.6‐times faster compared to a conventional Japanese layout.
