Augmented/mixed reality is anticipated to become the next computing platform, and its real‐time requirements demand the development of a new display subsystem architecture. We have created a scalable, fully digital platform, with an ultra‐small and efficient pixel that provides low diffraction loss and high contrast. Our platform enables the choice of either amplitude/polarization or phase/holographic modulation in a wearable form factor, up to 4K resolution. Our new software‐definable drive architecture is optimized for real‐time augmented/mixed reality and head‐up display applications, where high frame rates, low latency and short persistence are critical.
