It is better for LED backlight in helmet‐mounted display to provide collimated light to achieve high efficiency. The paper presents a simple design method for planar lightsource. The edge light theory is exploited to make the planar lightsource become a virtual spot lightsource. The practical test results show that the central luminance of the backlight with the lens array has 320% increase than the backlight without the lens array. FWHM decreases from 39° with 2 diffuser fdms to 12° with 1 diffuser film and the lens array.
