Dual panel local dimming (DPLD) was proposed, which adopts a new highly transparent passive light valve (LV) panel between a backlight and an image panel. The proposed LV panel enables to enhance contrast and to control dimming blocks more precisely compared to the conventional local dimming. As a result, contrast ratio was significantly increased to 170,000:1.
