The width of cross shaped disclination line of photo aligned VA‐LCDs, which appears as a dark line under crossed polarizers, is independent of the pixel size, so when LCDs become high definition, the transmittance of the display is mainly governed by the dark line width. Dependence of the dark line width upon the pre‐tilt angle is confirmed by means of experiment and simulation, i.e., a lower pre‐tilt angle induces a thinner dark line. The effect of the pre‐tilt angle on transmittance of an actual pixel design in LCDs is also confirmed by 3D simulation. Moreover, by applying a zig‐zag source line concept for the TFT substrate design, further improvement on the transmittance against the straight source line structure is predicted.
