Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are widely used for mobile devices. They are usually edgelit that a LED light source is installed at the edge of the displays and the produced light is spread out through a light waveguide plate to illuminate the display. We developed a polarizing light waveguide plate from polymer stabilized nematic liquid crystal. It can convert unpolarized light from the edgelight into linearly polarized light by selective scattering. It can greatly increase the light efficiency of edgelit LCDs.
