A novel three dimensional user interface technology (3D UI) is reported. The interface is a single planar device enabling multiple modes of human/machine interaction operating continuously from on the device surface to off the device surface; a surface‐to‐air capability. For example, our device can not only sense multiple finger touch and multiple stylus interaction on its surface, but also can detect “air touch”, “air pinch” and gestures in the near field space up to several inches above its surface. Thus, two dimensional user interface functionality has been extended continuously into the third dimension above the device.
