A new method of dynamic backlight control, based on Local Tone Mapping, which avoids traditional dynamic and static artifacts, is introduced and is compared quantitatively with currently deployed CABC approaches. This paper also describes a methodology, based on user studies, for quantifying the tradeoff between perceptual image quality and power saving in content‐adaptive backlight controlling systems.
