In this paper, we reported a new type negative dispersion (ND) retarder using a self‐organization of smectic liquid crystal (LC) and polymer composite. A smectic LC absorbing a short wavelength (λ) of ultra‐violet (UV) light was mixed with reactive monomers absorbing a long λ of UV light. The constituent molecules have intrinsically positive dispersion (PD) property. The mixtures were self‐organized forming a two‐dimensional structure where the reactive monomers were located in the inter‐layer space of the smectic LC. The composite showed a gradual transition from PD to ND of birefringence (Δn) with increasing the monomer concentration.
