This paper examines the strategic spatial context for sustainable development in Scotland. In providing this contextual overview the paper considers the influence of European Union policies and the evolution of Scottish and UK thinking. Particular emphasis is placed on the recent introduction of the idea of preparing a Scottish national spatial planning framework. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. and ERP Environment.
