Experimental measurements are presented of the total scattering cross‐section of four gases: He, Air, CH 4 , and Argon as a function of electron beam energy. The method used was that of Gauvin. A comparison of theoretical estimates of the total scattering cross‐section with the experimental data indicates that the model used gives generally reliable results. The data confirm that the gases tend to be molecular rather than atomic in nature in this pressure range (1–300 Pascal). The factors affecting the accuracy of these results are examined.
