The diffusion matrix model proposed by Desai and Reimer (1990) has been investigated. After some modifications it appeared to be a powerful tool for rapid determination of the SE and BSE signals from two‐dimensional surface topographies. Results for low atomic number specimens show good agreement between experimental and theoretical data.
